1970s Studio Craft Dining Table by Sam Forrest in Solid Cherry mid century wendell castle
A 1970s studio craft dining table designed by Sam Forrest. (1936-2021).
This table consists of solid cherry which is stacked, laminated, and hand carved. There is not a straight line on the piece, a true masterwork of design and craftsmanship.
Sam Forrest of Richmond, VA studied under Alan Lazarus at RIT. Alan Lazarus a fine woodworker in his own right studied under Wendell castle who was taught by the grandfather of the studio craft movement Wharton Esherick. There are plenty of influences from Wendell castle that shine through in this piece.
Sam Forrest created furniture in three distinct periods during his life. It has been said that his first period, which this table is from, is his best for quality and creativity.
Condition:
Original finish which has developed a warm patina over the last 50 years. Some water staining to the surface, and a dark heat stain in one area. Feet showing some previous moisture exposure. Shows very well. Could be refinished but we wanted the warmth of the patina and wood to shine through.
