A rare stereo designed by Dieter Rams for Braun. The Braun Atelier 1-81 Stereo with am fm radio and record player paired with an exceedingly rare pair of L2 “washing machine” speakers circa 1958. The walnut case suspended over the tubular legs with a nod to the Eames pieces and Marcel Breuer being produced at the time.
The radio has three AM and one FM bands, with two separate tuning indexes driven by a single tuning knob through clutches actuated by the band selection keys. Treble and bass controls plus key register for low, high and voice. Built-in antennas, with the AM ferrite rod which can be oriented by a knob on the panel. Stereo audio amplifier DIN connector for an external record players or tape recorder. Now used for the fitted bluetooth. On the back are the outputs for external speakers.The chassis, model RC81D, has nine tubes plus two germanium diodes and the selenium bridge rectifier.

Condition: Missing arm to hold open the record cover when record is playing. Record arm will need to be adjusted after shipping to get speed corrected. Speakers have been serviced with new speakers and speaker wires. The walnut case showing some chips in the corners and scratches and wear. White paint showing crazing. The legs showing some age appropriate pitting and wear. Good Original patina.
